Help set the tone for 30 November’s Day of Action by getting your favourite radio stations to play Let’s Get Together by The Workers. A simple phoned in song request can win us a few minutes valuable air time in between the news bulletins.

If you’re a regular listener, you’ll know best how your station handles requests – some will run a mile at the sound of something ‘political’ – some won’t, so match your request accordingly, from asking for the song “…to show our public servants how much we appreciate the work they do” through to “…to keep us singing on the picket line”.

You can get hold of phone numbers and email contacts via the very handy Media UK radio station directory, which lists loads of UK stations.

Send us a tweet if you get one on – we’d love to hear!

Many of the members of the group sing with their own bands and groups too, and if you’re after showing support to them in person, here are some of their upcoming gigs over the rest of the week:

Steve White is playing the Standard Music Venue in Walthamstow tonight (Weds 23rd Nov), with Steve White and the Protest Family.

Robb Johnson has something of a mini tour on at the moment, with Robb Johnson and the Irregulars, stopping by in Leicester’s Musicians and Bradford’s 1 in 12 Club on Thursday (24th) and Friday (25th), before going on to headline Saturday night’s lineup at the Raise Your Banners festival in Bradford.

And Friday also sees Veronica Martell‘s band The Skamonics performing at London’s Round Midnight Jazz and Blues Bar.

Unfortunately, those of you in the rest of the country are just going to have to download The Workers’ single, crank up the stereo and get your lighters out at home.

JanTallis: “A great coming-together; brilliant current take on an old favourite Canned Heat song.”

Davidrolanpayne: “Poignant, wonderfully performed reminder of why we need a world class public sector. Great video too!”

pcu2gfal: “Fantastic Song for a Brilliant Cause: The government needs to realise the invaluable jobs public sector employees perform. Please support your nurses, physios, postmen, bin men, physios, midwives, occupational therapists, teachers and all the other professions that make this country what it is!”

Ginny: “love the song and the video. the video only touches on the different jobs covered by the public sector but still makes me feel a sense of what we will lose if jobs continue to be cut.”

If you’re buying it (here are some links to online stores currently stocking it), please take a second to add a customer review and let the store and other users know what you think about the song, and about solidarity with our public service workers.

Reading what people think about the song really makes our day, but also helps spread the word!

A cold, rainy October Monday night saw 14 public sector workers from around the country gather in an airy studio in Chiswick to record a new version of the Canned Heat classic ‘Let’s Work Together’.

They included a probation officer from York, a mother and daughter midwife pair from London, a reception teacher from Hove and a physiotherapist from Nottingham. Public service supergroup The Workers was born!

All new to each other, the group shyly said hello, posed for a series of photographs, and supped cups of tea while record producer Nick Patrick explained how the evening would progress. Each of the volunteers would take it in turn to sing a line or a verse from the song, and at the end the group would record the choral sections.

Despite their varied musical backgrounds, none of The Workers had been in a professional studio before and they were all excited. ‘I can’t believe I’ve got the chance to do this!’ said one. ‘This is better than my usual Monday night,’ laughed another.

One by one they filed into the recording booth and took their turns to belt out their lines. As they had the chance to sing more and more confidence levels noticeable grew, and Nick used all his experience and patience to encourage the best vocal range from everyone.

Spirits and comradeship grew. Each member returned from the solo booth to whoops, applause and encouragement – there was a real sense of community, as public sector workers wished all the others the best and did all they could to make the group feel at ease and to give the best performance.

Everybody coped well with the unfamiliar distractions of a professional photographer, and a film-maker recording the night as it unfolded for a video to accompany the track. The end of the evening approached and bang on schedule it was time for the choral sections. The backing vocals were put down, the lead roles were given out and ad libs were effortlessly recorded. It was a wrap!

A new single from a brand new group, but also a start for new friendships, and an exciting new way to raise public awareness and solidarity for public services at this crucial time.

“Let’s Work Together” is released on 20 November. Check back here for links to download services, and please help to send The Workers and their message of solidarity up the charts.
